George Soros and the Importance of Philanthropy

There are few names in politics that create such instant and diverse reactions as George Soros. Soros is a Hungarian born, New York-based investor who made his hay in the early ’90s shorting the English pound. over the years, George Soros has grown to become one of the most impressive investors and philanthropists in the world, all while staying committed to his progressive ideals. As a student of the Open Society teachings, Soros knows that he has to put his money where his mouth is in order to live the most fruitful and effective life possible. In the era of Donald Trump, Soros’ renewed philanthropic efforts are more important than ever. Recently, George Soros made headlines around the world when financial disclosures revealed that the philanthropist had donated the majority of his wealth to charity, donating upwards of $18 billion to the Open Society Foundations.

George Soros established the Open Society Foundations in the early ’70s. His goal with the establishment of the OSF was to create a charity that could reach out to grassroots groups around the world in order to fight for some of the most important concepts in the modern world: social justice, freedom of expression, government transparency and more. Soros created the OSF with his own money and has since already pumped close to $19 billion into it — before his latest charitable donation. The OSF has been active all around the globe, from Europe to Africa and even in the United States. Nowadays, George Soros sees that foundation can make a huge impact in the United States as Donald Trump works steadfastly to erode the civil liberties that Americans have fought for their entire lives.

Despite Soros’ consistent philanthropic endeavors, he has become a lightning rod for criticism from the far right of the political spectrum. Soros has become, in some ways, the perfect boogeyman for American conservatism. The reason? Right-wing media monoliths have been blaming George Soros for everything possible, and we mean this literally. Whether HR McMaster, Trump’s National Security advisor, is firing alt-right staffers or conservatives like Roy Moore are getting accused of transgressions — Soros is called the puppet master behind it all. Of course, this is all unsubstantiated and completely baseless, but that doesn’t stop the attacks from coming. The problem for right-wing media giants is that Soros is a billionaire progressive and he does not need to cow to their narrative.

The continued demonization of progressive philanthropy is systemic of greater problems in the United States political system. The continued assault on all things progressive has severely damaged the works being done by good men like George Soros. With that being said, Soros’decision to move almost all of his wealth to his charity is indicative of his willingness to stand up for what he believes in. The $18 billion that Soros has put into his own foundation will serve to fight back in what has been considered a relatively dark time for American politics. With Donald Trump’s divisive and dangerous rhetoric emanating from the White House, Soros is more needed than ever.

Frontera Fund Fights To Protect Dreamers From DACA Repeal

Enacted in the summer of 2012, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) gives immigrants who were brought to the United States as children the ability to live, work and attend school in America without fear of deportation. Any individual applying for DACA relief must pay an application fee, meet eligibility requirements and submit to a background check. The DACA program has been extremely successful since its inception five years ago. Nearly 800,000 immigrants are protected by the program. Over 95 percent of DACA participants are gainfully employed. These Dreamers pay taxes, purchase homes, buy cars and attend school. Dreamers have been stimulating the nation’s economy since the start of the DACA relief program, so it came as a shock to many when President Trump vowed to end the program. Business Insider reports that repealing DACA would cost America billions of dollars. The Gross Domestic Product would suffer a $460.3 billion loss if DACA was repealed, and southern states would suffer for years to come. Even with all of the evidence proving that repealing DACA would be detrimental to the economy, members of the GOP are determined to end the program. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton threatened legal action if the Trump administration didn’t rescind DACA. President Trump showed his antipathy towards immigrants when he pardoned disgraced Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio of his crimes. Arpaio has long been known for racial profiling, terrorizing immigrants, abusing prisoners, arresting reporters who covered his crimes and allowing his men to light a dog on fire while in pursuit of a man wanted for traffic violations. The DACA Dreamers need allies now more than ever. That’s where Frontera Fund comes in. In October of 2007, journalists Mike Larkin and Jim Lacey were arrested for covering Joe Arpaio’s crimes in the Phoenix News Times. They later received a $3.75 million settlement in a wrongful arrest lawsuit. Lacey and Larkin used this money to fund Frontera Fund. Frontera Fund supports organizations that fight for migrant’s rights in Arizona. The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund is offering support, information, assistance and guidance to all immigrants during these trying times. They also strive to educate Americans on DREAM Act legislation. The DREAM Act would provide a permanent solution for those benefiting from DACA. American Institute of Architects: Positively Integrating Novel Ideas Including Public Health

American Institute of Architects has acquired the prominence of being the last word in the architecture ecosystem with innovation, connectivity with members, novel architectural ideas and more. The premier organization of architects in the U.S. has more than 150 years of expertize in offering various activities, including government advocacy, public outreach for supporting architecture as a profession, community redevelopment, and education. Since its formation in 1857, the organization played a major role in transitioning the industry by keeping vision focused on the future. Being headquartered in Washington, D.C, the organization is led by Robert Ivy, who is the Chief Executive and EVP of the AIA.

The AIA also delivers a monthly magazine named Architect, and it provides a detailed overview of the changing trends in the architecture world. The magazine is considered as an excellent reference for the aspiring architects and builders around the world. Recent years, the AIA, under the leadership of Robert Ivy, gives greater focus on the technology involvement in the architecture, smart homes, environment-friendly structures, and more. The organization has communicated its vision of a smart planet that addresses various goals from improving public health to offering disaster relief solutions. Robert Ivy encourages the architects to expand their thoughts beyond mere design and building to address the modern day challenges of various societies. Under his leadership, the AIA has declared a ten-year commitment to developing solutions focusing on better natural disaster resiliency, sustainability, and public health.

It is a well-thought strategy of improving public health through innovative architecture models. For instance, the Central Park in New York City was designed to normally substandard housing in the area of the city. Initially, it was not conceived as a recreational space, but the idea of the park was adopted to improve the public health. While coming to architecture, Robert Ivy says that architecture world focuses on different themes at various times. He continued that in the previous decade, a strong emphasis was given to formalism. Architecture publications focused on speaking about buildings as objects rather than social engines by giving less attention to public health. In the current generation, new architects show a more comprehensive approach that addresses diverse population by targeting public health and other important factors.  Learn more at Biz Journal about Robert Ivy.

Ivy also said that a smart architecture can also reduce the rate of non-communicable diseases. This is particularly true when it comes to heart disease and diabetes, and cities and buildings that are designed to encourage physical activities – such as mandatory walk up stairs – along with direct access to fresh air, sunlight exposure, and more can improve the well-being of people. Altogether, the AIA is setting the focus on challenges that are raised by the changing climate, growing population, complex needs of various communities, and more.
