Frontera Fund Fights To Protect Dreamers From DACA Repeal

Enacted in the summer of 2012, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) gives immigrants who were brought to the United States as children the ability to live, work and attend school in America without fear of deportation. Any individual applying for DACA relief must pay an application fee, meet eligibility requirements and submit to a background check. The DACA program has been extremely successful since its inception five years ago. Nearly 800,000 immigrants are protected by the program. Over 95 percent of DACA participants are gainfully employed. These Dreamers pay taxes, purchase homes, buy cars and attend school. Dreamers have been stimulating the nation’s economy since the start of the DACA relief program, so it came as a shock to many when President Trump vowed to end the program. Business Insider reports that repealing DACA would cost America billions of dollars. The Gross Domestic Product would suffer a $460.3 billion loss if DACA was repealed, and southern states would suffer for years to come. Even with all of the evidence proving that repealing DACA would be detrimental to the economy, members of the GOP are determined to end the program. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton threatened legal action if the Trump administration didn’t rescind DACA. President Trump showed his antipathy towards immigrants when he pardoned disgraced Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio of his crimes. Arpaio has long been known for racial profiling, terrorizing immigrants, abusing prisoners, arresting reporters who covered his crimes and allowing his men to light a dog on fire while in pursuit of a man wanted for traffic violations. The DACA Dreamers need allies now more than ever. That’s where Frontera Fund comes in. In October of 2007, journalists Mike Larkin and Jim Lacey were arrested for covering Joe Arpaio’s crimes in the Phoenix News Times. They later received a $3.75 million settlement in a wrongful arrest lawsuit. Lacey and Larkin used this money to fund Frontera Fund. Frontera Fund supports organizations that fight for migrant’s rights in Arizona. The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund is offering support, information, assistance and guidance to all immigrants during these trying times. They also strive to educate Americans on DREAM Act legislation. The DREAM Act would provide a permanent solution for those benefiting from DACA.
